Noticed that the prices of NB Mx5s seem to be climbing slightly recently. I’m considering getting a rough but mechanically sound one and flipping it. The one above for example has reasonable mileage and supposedly a straight body but needs a new roof. Going for well under market value.

Check for the LSD or not, it’s quite an important price difference if one is installed already... I’d go as far as saying that having a LSD is quite a bit more important for a buyer looking for a fun sport car than having a 1.8L engine...

Nah, low spec doesn’t mean it doesn’t have one... It was a factory option. Lots of people who bought miata when new got them with zero option but LSD.

You know the roof is a lot of hassle to fit? Other than that, they’re great little cars. I assume ‘well under market value’ here means <£1k? If so, just buy it.
Oh, and you know what I’m going to point out, right? Early first-gen MX-5s are now eligible for classic cover.

Yeah I know they’re a right faff on but I’ve done harder jobs. It’s £800 but I’m pretty sure I can get it cheaper.
Yeah the early ones are pretty cheap to insure but they seem to suffer more from rust than NBs (maybe just because they’re older) and I don’t plan to keep it anyway so insurance isn’t a problem.

Nah, no need to dig very far, just get the car in neutral, lift the whole rear (both wheels) with a jack on the diff and turn one wheel by hand. If the opposite wheel turns the same way, it has a LSD, if it turns the opposite way, it has an open diff.

Certainly not for a used car. Lifting the thing on the diff and testing it takes litteraly 2 minutes. You can also take a clear look for rust or potential impacts/holes on the exhaust line while you’re at it.

one side of car on muddy/ grassy verge, give it some beans, if wheel on grass spins up, no LSD.
